Together we ARE fixing this
Every day there are children at home isolating without the technology needed to access their school work. This was a big issue in Herefordshire - but is being fixed.
The computers they need are already here. There are thousands of old, unused laptops sitting at the back of offices or on a shelf gathering dust. These are just what is needed. And this is where we are helping.
We ensure all business or personal data is securely erased. For free. And then make sure the computers go to the schools who need them most. And all donors can be assured that their generous support will go directly to helping the children in Herefordshire schools.
We believe that in these challenging times no child should be left behind just because they need to learn remotely.
We have reached out to businesses and individuals and they have donated used laptops and other digital devices. Using 4-Secure’s Government approved data erasure capability, we securely erased all data. Working with Herefordshire schools, we then distributed the devices to the areas of greatest need.
We have brought together a small, enthusiastic team of local organisations, supported by industry-leading technology companies, to provide the skills, expertise and capability to make this real. Local businesses. Local task force. Helping local schools.
I set up Laptops 2 Kids a few months ago with the aim to help fix the issue of children who are at home without the technology needed to access their school work.
The scheme has been FAR more successful than we expected. Which is great! However on account of this overwhelming response it is with both great pleasure and a heavy heart, I am now closing the scheme to new device donations to give us time to focus on turning around the remaining devices we have already received and getting them to schools before Easter.
We have had a HUGE response since early January, with thousands of members of the public and businesses contacting us to offer support, over £20,000 donated and hundreds of devices received and passed onto schools for the families and children who needed them most.
However this does not mean the scheme is ending! Far from it. We will be spending the next 6 weeks through to the school holidays processing the reminder of the devices we have received and continuing to work with schools to ensure we can continue to support those families and children in need.
I am proud that we have had the opportunity to 'do our bit' to lessen the impact of Covid on at least some families and children. And I am proud to have supported and served my local community. Everyone who has supported the scheme with donations should rightly be proud too.
It has been humbling to experience the generosity of the people and businesses of Herefordshire and their willingness to rally behind our calls for help. Wherever we have turned for support it has been forthcoming, and for that I am truly grateful. It is clearly also a reflection of what makes Herefordshire such a great county to live in.
We have, and are continuing to, make a difference. Together.
100% of all cash donations will go towards things like buying power cables, replacing damaged hard drives or providing minor upgrades to make the devices more usable.
Note: Go Fund Me asks to add a ‘tip’ to your donation which funds their service and does NOT come to us – this is optional so you can change it to zero!
